Tao Shuzo Distillery first acquire a whisky making license for Hanyu in 1946, and in 1980 they began distilling their own malt whisky. In 2000 Tao Shuzo ceased production of their whiskies and Ichiro Akuto (owner of Chichibu Distillery) a member of the family that originally owned and operated the distillery, took them onto his portfolio.
In 2021 Tao Shuzo Hanyu Distillery announced they will once again be distilling their own malt whisky and there have recreated their pot still based the old blue prints.
For this new whisky Tao Shuzo will use the finest Scottish malt and grain whiskies and blend them with the spring waters of Hanyu to produce balanced and soft whiskies.
